A perfect English day

As the sun goes down on this perfect August Bank Holiday Sunday, we know why we chose to spend our gap year in Dorset. What a magnificent day we have had in this amazing place where people are warm and welcoming, the English countryside is perfect and sometimes, like today, the weather is perfect too.

I started the day with coffee in our courtyard catching up with the news from home while Jim was at the gym. Then a long walk through the lanes around Nightingale Farm. It was warm enough to work up a sweat.

A little lane – the brook runs close beside, And spangles in the sunshine, while the fish glide swiftly by;

And hedges leafing with the green summertime; From out their greenery the old birds fly, And chirp and whistle in the morning sun;

Even the road signs are pretty in Dorset.

Hills, vales, woods, netted in a silver mist, Farm, granges, doubled up among the hills, And cattle grazing in the watered vales, And cottage-chimneys smoking from the woods,

The afternoon saw us enjoying the music, sun and hospitality at the Fox Inn, our Friday night regular. We did get some gentle teasing as the English team slashed their way to a miraculous victory! Cold beer, music and a BBQ on the green with good friends made for a very special day.

As the sun sets over Nightingale Farm it’s time to rest and then get ready for another day and another adventure.
